有同学问含the number of的主语后面接are还是is，也就是，含the number of的主语，后面的谓语动词用单数形式还是复数形式？

【答】用单数形式，比如 is, was等。

The number of the children is 30.

 孩子的数量是30。

（主语是“孩子的数量”，主语是数量，即the number。主语the number是单数，所以谓语动词用单数形式的is）

The number of teachers in our school is twenty. 

我们学校的老师的数目是20。

The number of immigrants is increasing. 

移民的数量在增加。

注意：the number of + 可数名词复数： …的数量
